Formal welcome to our Charter Gala Celebration!
Welcome to the regular meeting of the Rotary E-Club of the Caribbean, 7020. My name is Kitty Bucsko, and I am the charter president of this excellent club! But this is not quite a regular meeting. This week, we celebrate our Charter with a very special meeting.
This day is finally here – and it’s been a long time coming. It is a significant milestone in the life of Rotary. District 7020 – already a very progressive district – will be leading the way –– with a tremendously active and vibrant, welcoming and caring Rotary E-Club.
We know that membership is an important part of Rotary. It is our goal to ensure that each member of our E-Club will be engaged. That each member of our E-Club will know without question that he or she is a very important part of Rotary, and a very important part of our Rotary E-Club.
Fellowship is also important, and we are doing very well so far engaging our members with fellowship at our Happy Hour Hangouts!
Our E-Club and our members have many advantages over other Rotary Clubs. Our members can attend our meetings at any time during the week, at any time that is convenient for each one of us.
Our members can be vital contributors to the global Rotary community even if we travel – because we make our meetings very easy to attend.
Our members can experience fellowship with other like-minded Rotarians who are located in many areas of the globe. The common bond we have is the humanitarian interest in District 7020 and the 10 countries that comprise our district.
The World as we know it is constantly changing through technology. Technology plays a very important role in our everyday lives – and through our E-Club, we are able to stay up to date with current technology – much moreso than perhaps is possible in the traditional clubs.
We can connect with our own members who may live at a great distance from us – and that allows us very much to share in a world that every day seems to grow smaller. Our neighbours are now our close friends – our neighbours in other countries are now our close friends because we are living in the 21st Century. Our Rotary E-Club is taking advantage of all of the best resources to Engage Rotary and to Change Lives.
No longer do we have to wonder what happens in another part of the world. Today, connecting with the other side of the world is often just a click away – and we can be there. We can attend Rotary meetings in other parts of the world – and we can do that because we are an E-Club.
The future is bright. I hope that every single member of our E-Club feels shares that same view, that same warm feeling, and that same enthusiasm for what we have accomplished, and what we will continue to accomplish within our E-Club. We can truly make a difference. We are leading the way today, and we will continue to lead the way in the future as we serve Rotary.
We will become better with each passing week. We are becoming better. We then can begin to get bolder – seeking out innovative ways to make our mark in the Rotary world – and then we can become a larger and more vibrant club. We will be able to change lives within District 7020 and beyond!
I wish every single one of our members happiness, great satisfaction, and success in all that you do for Rotary.

A WEE SMILE -
PLANNING FOR A LONGEVITY IN OUR ROTARY E-CLUB
A group of E-Club Rotarians meet to discuss where they should hold their very special Charter Celebration Gala. They decide that they should all get together in the traditional way to celebrate and PDG Diana stresses the importance of this get-together to promote their friendship and fellowship. They decide that the Gausthof zum Lowen restaurant is appropriate because all of the waiters and waitresses provide an exceptionally good service and the food is good.
10 years later, they meet to discuss where they should hold their 10th Reunion dinner and Devorath suggests that they should meet at the Gausthof zum Lowen restaurant because they had such a good time at the Charter Gala.
10 years later, for their 20th Reunion, the group meets again to decide where they should celebrate and they again agree to meet at the Gausthof zum Lowen because the food there is still very good, and Amarylis continues to recommend their wine selection.
A decade later, for their 30th, they once again choose the Gasthof zum Lowen because they can eat there in peace and quiet and the restaurant is also smoke free.
10 years later, at the 40th, once again they discuss where they should gather, and surprise! They all agree on the Gausthof zum Lowen because the restaurant is wheel-chair accessible and they also have an elevator.
10 years later, the remaining members meet to celebrate 50 years in Rotary. They again discuss where they should meet for dinner. Finally it is agreed that they should dine at the Gausthof zum Lowe because they've never been there before.

POLIO UPDATE - We are "This Close"

POLIOPLUS UPDATE
What follows is updated Rotary Foundation and PolioPlus information provided by our District Rotary Foundation Chair (DRFC) Lindsey Cancino.
Good News (all based on information through mid-December):
- Zero new cases of Type 3 polio in the world this year - first time ever.
- In endemic countries - -down 45% to 135 cases.
Challenges
- Non-endemic countries up dramatically; 224 cases in 2013 vs. 5 at this time in 2012.
- Importation of the disease in previously zero countries, particularly in Africa and the middle East, have created outbreaks.
- Minor outbreaks (less than 20 cases in each country) in Ethiopia, Cameroon, Syria and Kenya. Major outbreak (which then contributed to the outbreaks in surrounding countries) in Somalia resulting in 183 cases, but none since July so the vaccination and containment efforts are paying off.
- Pakistan remains a real concern also with the violence now aimed at Polio workers and the politicizing of the eradication.
Polio was recently confirmed in Syria, a country that has been free of this disabling and potentially fatal disease since 1999. In response, health authorities in Syria and neighboring countries have launched urgent, large-scale, multi-country immunization campaigns to ensure that every child is reached with the polio vaccine.
The situation in Syria is most tricky as instability of the situation there make efforts to contain and vaccinate difficult as well as dangerous. However, commitment to vaccinate 2 million children in the region is funded and underway and the Syrian government (however stable they may be) have committed to seeing it stopped so that is encouraging.
Rotary and its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative are working together with local health authorities to activate the outbreak response.
Recent polio cases in previously polio-free countries serve as a stark reminder that as long as polio still exists, unimmunized children everywhere remain at risk.
Summary
Our efforts continue to show major successes:
- First time ever we appear to be on the brink of only one strain of the virus in the world
- Even where there are outbreaks, rapid and concerted response supported by not only our group that have been trying to eradicate since 1988 but many governments around the world now joining the fight to ensure success in a very meaningful way. Even 5 years ago this would have been for us to solve on our own.
- If we can keep WPV 3 at zero, it means all efforts can be turned to WPV 1 only and with renewed moral and financial support from sovereign countries like Great Britain, Australia, USA, Canada and others, we can get this done.

INDUCTION OF OUR MEMBERS
Fellow Rotarians:
Each one of you has been chosen to membership in the Rotary E-Club of the Caribbean, 7020 because your fellow members believe you to be a leader in your vocation and because you manifest those qualities of head and of heart which fit you to interpret and impart the message of Rotary to those with whom you come in contact.
You are the representative of your vocation in this club and any contribution of an educational
value pertaining to that vocation must naturally come to us through you.
On the other hand, you become the ambassador from us to your classification, and it becomes your duty to carry the ideals and principles of service to your work.
The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and in particular, to encourage and foster:
First: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;
Second: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying by each Rotarian of his occupation as an opportunity to serve society;
Third: The application of the ideal of service by every Rotarian to his personal, business and community life;
Fourth: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.
I charge you to judge yourself by the Rotary Four-Way Test of the things you think, say or do:
First - Is it the Truth?
Second - Is it fair to all concerned?
Third - Will it build goodwill and better friendships?
Fourth - Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
The community will know and judge Rotary through your embodiment of it in character and
service, and we believe our principles and organization to be safe in your keeping.
We also expect much from you in help and inspiration, which will enable us to be better Rotarians, and with this hope we most heartily offer you Rotary fellowship.
Rotary - it's not just another club. It's a way of life. But, you have been elected to membership because we feel you will fit into this way of life.
Membership in Rotary is an honor and privilege, and every privilege has its corresponding obligations. One of the special obligations of membership is regular attendance at the weekly meetings that are posted online. It is the basic method of fulfilling the principle of fellowship and also a way by which you represent your vocation.
Every member is expected to perform his or her share of club and community service, and the committees of the club will afford you opportunities to give service.
Last, but by no means least, is our ideal of friendship. As you expect to receive, please give. May you be stimulated by the friendship you find here, and may we in return know you to be an added
source of strength to our club.

It is my privilege and honor to formally induct each one of you into the Rotary E-Club of the Caribbean, 7020. I also have pleasure of presenting you with the Rotary pin - the emblem of our worldwide association. Wear it always and with pride.
